Cameras became my upbringing, my education, my destination. One could regard this as a way of escaping. The darkroom became for me in my youth the place where I could daydream.

As a child I belonged to what you call the upper classes. But this class had no resemblance to the upper classes that I now see depicted in films and television series. I remember the upper classes of my childhood as eccentric. My relatives could have a chauffeur, a gardener, a cook, kitchen maids, parlour maids, and other servants. But they could also go bankrupt,  wear threadbare clothes and behave unconventionally, to say the least.

I’ll return to the summer of 1951. My brother was 6, my sister was 10 and I was 12 years old. We lived in a huge flat in a posh area of Stockholm. But in our home nobody had made up the beds for many years. There was dust and dirt everywhere and the dark curtains were always drawn.

There was no food. All people living in the flat were paralysed by migraine attacks. Mother told us children every day that she was very ill. She would soon die. We children wished intensely that it would be true. This gave us a bad conscience, which we continued to have for the additional 50 years that she lived.

How far back do our do our memories go? Are they with us even though we have repressed them? When I was still fairly young I published a photo book with the title “Hiding Behind the Camera part 1”. I did this in order to fix everything with the help of the camera. But it does not work that way.

“Hiding Behind the Camera part 2” is a film.

He discovers that she has quit school without telling him and that she has lost all contact with her old friends. She has become a complete stranger.

Another girl, more or less of the same age as Leonor, Sara, contacts Ricardo and says that she is a friend of Leonor’s and that she can help him find his daughter. Ricardo is grateful and together they start searching for Leonor in night-clubs and bars, places that Ricardo would never have connected with his daughter.

Slowly the picture he has of Leonor begins to change and it becomes more like Sara. And Sara, whose great ambition is to become a presenter on one of Ricardo’s television shows, encourages this development by pretending to be Leonor.  In Ricardo’s mind Sara becomes Leonor. LOW-FLYING AIRCRAFT (2002)

Original Title: LOW-FLYING AIRCRAFT
Language: Portuguese and some English
Duration: 80 minutes
Production Company: Torromfilm (Sweden), Filmes do Tejo/RTV (Portugal)
Screenplay: Solveig Nordlund, Colin Tucker
based on a short story by J.G. Ballard
Cinematography: Acácio de Almeida
Music: Johan Zachrisson
Cast: Margarida Marinho, Miguel Guilherme, Rui Morrison, Sheila Buchanan

The English writer J.G. Ballard became famous with “Empire of the Sun”. He does not write science-fiction set in outer space or thousands years ahead. He writes stories that are very close to our own time. To close your eyes and imagine how the world would look if……………………is how a Ballard story works.

Story:
It’s not too far in the future, and the world looks much the same as it does today. Except for one thing… There are very few people. And no children at all. It seems that the human race is dying. Perhaps the genetic material has just worn out? Perhaps tampering with the food we eat has played a part?

Very few women are getting pregnant and nobody seems to give birth to normal healthy babies. Judith Foster is a physiotherapist, married to Richard. He’s a civil servant, working for the EU. Judith is still fertile: she has conceived on six occasions already. Each time however pregnancy tests have shown that the child is a mutant, and Judith has been forced, by the law, to abort. Now she conceives again  and she thinks - suppose the elaborate tests on the foetus have the effect of causing the mutation to occur? Richard is horrified. He thinks Judith’s argument is nonsense, but his love for her overcomes his resistance.

With the help of a friend, Van Dorn, he obtains the necessary forged papers and takes Judith away from the city to a hotel in a tiny, decaying seaside resort on the fringes of the European continent, where there are no police, no laws.  Here Judith will be in the care of the enigmatic Doctor Gould, who seems to accept Judith’s belief that her baby is not a mutation. A rapport springs up between them and Richard begins to become jealous. He is also suspicious of Gould’s other activities - particularly the frequent flights he makes in his small aircraft. Where is Gould going? What is he doing?

And Judith herself becomes increasingly alarmed about her baby. It kicks so powerfully in the womb, as if it wants to harm her. She begins to fear that she’s carrying a monster, begins to hate the baby, begins to hope that it will die………..

INTERNATIONAL PRESS REVIEWS
Partly a kids’ thriller with supernatural touches, partly the story of a young teen who finally finds her place in life. “Touched by an Angel” again shows helmer Christina Olofson’s natural ease when working with kids and young women. As in her fine film about school bullying, “Truth or Dare”, many of the pic’s virtues lie in the excellent performances from young and inexperienced actors. VARIETY

Press reviews: This anthology, consisting of seven short stories, takes the viewers to the isolated land of the Nenets, who live, literary, at the top of the world. Fascinating and beautifully made. It’s the small details of Nenet life, captured in grainy B&W images, that fascinate in this strangely beautiful film. (Variety)

Story:
The Nenets are the people who inhabit the tundra in the far north of Russia.

Filmmakers Anastasia Lapsui and Markku Lehmuskallio made several documentaries about the Nenets in the 1990s, but decided their new film SEVEN SONGS FROM THE THUNDRA, would be largely fictional.

The first story Sacrifice, depicts a chilly winter’s religious ceremony in which a reindeer is sacrificed to the Gods. Next, the Bride explores the traditional pre-Revolution ways of these people. A young girl is supposed to marry a rich man chosen by her widowed mother, but she prefers a local boy and elopes.

The next four stories deal with Soviet communism’s effect on the Nenets. Commissars arrive in the community, demanding the people conform to the new order. The Nenets have difficulty accepting Lenin as a kind of replacement god, and react angrily when their children are taken away to Russian-Soviet schools.

Comédia Infantil is a simplistic but charming fable about the spirit of a people devastated by war and the secret strengths in even the most apparently feeble of them.Pic's clean, direct storytelling and elements of magic and spirituality make it appropriate for TV. INTERNATIONAL PRESS REVIEWS

A moving and painfully true portrait of being a teenager and trying to make the right friends, "Truth or Dare" is a perfect film for its target audience, girls in their early teens and their parents. Pic realistically depicts the intrigue that is common at schools of both sexes. Young actors are talented and convincing.

It's certainly the most accomplished film to date by Christina Olofson. Film does not fall into trap of caricaturing the parents. Subject matter is universal.

MISS AMERIGUA
Language:

Co-Production: Paraguay/Sweden
Drama/Comedy
Duration:
95 mins
Director: Luis R. Vera
Script: Luis Vera, Andres Colman
Cast: Raquel Baeza, Ayesa Frutos, Sonia Marchewka, Hector Silva, Jesus Perez.

"..this satiric film turns up a winner. A fun and sometimes sexy romp about the small-town uproar surrounding a beauty contest" HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

"..reliably amusing. ..could bring LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE fans sniffing." VARIETY

"...sharp, funny and shamelessly sentimental story.." LOS ANGELES TIMES

Story:
MISS AMERIGUA is a satiric tragicomedy that takes place in Paraguay, but it has universal validity. The film pokes fun at vain, greedy and dishonest people everywhere. Miss Amerigua is a story of good vs. evil.

The film starts with a hint of a childhood bond between Evaristo and Maria. This reverie is shaken when the boy witnesses the murder of his activist father at the hands of Amerigua's resident fascist, Col. Banderas.  Years later, the grown Evaristo returns with revenge and Maria on his mind. The military regime in Amerigua has recently been deposed.

At first the town doesn't notice his return. Everybody is caught up in the annual beauty contest. This time there is unusual stiff competition between the very grown-up Maria, Evaristo's sexy sister Rosa and Carmen Banderas, haughty daughter of the colonel, who by now owns most of the verdant region......

Duration:
79 mins
Director:
Lauri Törhönen
Script:
Pertti Takatalo, Lauri Törhönen
Cast:
Tom Pöysti, Jonna Järnefelt, Stina Rautelin

"This modest but thoroughly gripping pic is based on a bank holdup and hostage drama that rocked Finland in 1986. Lauri Törhönen's tautly directed thriller should find fest exposure and TV playtime without difficulty"
VARIETY February 1995

Story:
This feature film is based on an actual incident that took place in 1986. The sleepy summer season in Helsinki was rudely shattered by a young man carrying explosives. He entered a suburban branch of a large commercial bank, took hostages, and demanded a large sum of money.

The Finnish police were unaccustomed to this sort of drama, well known in some other countries, and the police team behaved with little psychological insight, possibly pushing the gunman over the edge. Some money was handed over, and a getaway car was arranged. The robber and his three hostages, a young male customer and two of the bank's female employees, drove off and were followed by a convoy of police cars.

A siege ensued. The inevitable happened. At the last moment, the two girls were able to escape before the robber detonated the car, killing himself and his male hostage.

Drama
Duration:
80 mins
Director: Christina Olofson
Script: Christina Olofson
Cast: Kerstin Nerbe, Victoria Bond; Joann Falletta, Veronika Dudarova,       Ortrud Mann, Camilla Kolchinsky

A WOMAN IS A RISKY BET has been sold to television in many countries including USA and the UK.

"A feature film about orchestra conductors - the idea is ridiculous. But when the final frame faded, I was happy that such a ridiculous idea was actually carried through, since it turned out to be a stroke of genius"
AFTONBLADET

"Christina Olofson has made a fascinating film. It is fascinating because it gets so close to the process of conducting...The viewer is gripped."
SVENSKA DAGBLADET

Story: A WOMAN IS A RISKY BET is about women who share a passion; who are obsessed with their work and who have the courage to break with existing values and accept challenge. It is about not giving up; protecting your own life-force and believing in change. The six women are all pioneers, breaking their way into the men's world. Many orchestras are extremely conservative; many even ban female conductors.

Conductors need extremely high competence, personality and absolute belief both in themselves and their ability to gain the attention and respect of orchestras. What drives these women, despite the problems, sacrifices and all the opposition, is their great and common love of music.

Duration: 90 mins

Script: Lauri Törhönen

Director: Lauri Törhönen

"The Undressing is a gripping drama played out between two players almost entirely within the confines of a Helsinki hotel room. Despite these limitations, the film is never dull and director Lauri Törhönen keeps it from seeming theatrical or looking like a small-screen fodder. This is an impressive battle of the sexes, a small-scale film with plenty of power and potency. It should be viewed by those on the lookout for original, exciting material"
VARIETY
